A Whore
A few days ago, I got the chance to read a comment made by Kangna Ranaut, on the infamous issue between her and Hritik Roshan, "If a woman is sexually active, then she is called a whore".
How strange it is, that a female needs to be more socially active in comparison to a male. She needs to be more active in family and relations. If she is a working woman, than she needs to be more active in both the office and the house, unlike a man. From the day she is born to the day she dies, a female faces many changes in her body, and she has to stay both physically and mentally active. The society, the family and the traditions, expect her to be extraordinary in these things from the moment she starts walking. When a female is born, she is said to be a treasure that belongs to another house, when a male is born, it is said his purpose is to pullulate. And so when a male is sexually active, it is accepted, but the when a female is sexually active, it is unacceptable.
If a man wants his dynasty to grow, then sorry but it is necessary for a woman to be sexually active. Or else the man always has the choice to become a homosexual.
Now we will take the next word, Whore. Who is a whore? She is someone who takes money to engage in sexual activity. How many among you can think that Kangna had taken money for the sex? How many can think, that a woman of no matter what age, who sleeps outside of her marriage, does it for money. A whore does not see the color, the height, the weight or the status of a man, all she sees is how much money she can earn from him.
Whore; a characterless woman...
But then again, there is that famous saying, "A man wants his wife to take care of him like his mother would, he wants her to romance with him as a girlfriend would and he wants her to be like a whore to warm his bed". If his wife does not do all that he expects, then he puts her aside by calling her, "Thandi". However, if she is as active as he wants her to be, he becomes suspicious. If a woman has a jolly nature (she talks with all with a smile, knows how to crack a joke, can talk to men as freely as she can talk with women), then everyone thinks she is characterless.
Women who works in night shifts, has a touring job, or has to do the field work, the "Aaspass ki sugbugahat" deems her characterless. I had seen an ad once, in which the model was saying,"If we do a job in daylight, then it is accepted. But if we do the same job at night, then it’s not okay?" It is said that a woman wants all her needs to be fulfilled by one man. But every man only wants one thing from every woman. And yet, he is not considered characterless.
Just as by asking, "Kitne aadmi the?!”, Gabbar (Sholay), does not becomes a gay; the same way, your success, that you have earned on your own, your refusal to share that success with those who are more successful than you and along with it all if you are sexually active too, then that does not make you a whore Kangna.
There are many famous characters that I know of, whom I can call characterless openly. And you won't be able to disagree with me even if would want to. Urvashi, Menaka, Rambha, and Tilottama; what are your thoughts about these names? Men who stayed far away from the worldly distractions, from bonds such as family, and lived deep in the forests meditating half their life, these women distracted them. These women, and those like them, lured these men away with their beauty, or to be more straightforward, with their sexuality. If in today's date, a woman does this, she will be called a whore; then why were the names mentioned above called "Apsaras"?
I've read in many books and magazines, that our Nation's Father, Shri Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi, used to sleep with unmarried naked girls, to test his control over his body.
Did he truly control himself every time? Or was there a guard standing by the bedside to tell him, "Sir, control!”
Who were those girls? Did they belong to respectable families? Did they sleep with him thinking, that he truly won't touch them. If this really was true, then why did they sleep with him? Were they willing? Or were they obligated to do so? Did Mahatma or those people from the Aashram, never gave a single thought about what future these girls will have? Or maybe there was no reason to think about their future; maybe they were just whores who did this for money. However, if they were no whores, then what will you call them? Desh Bhakts, Mahan, or really just a characterless whore…?
Will you not question the views of Mahatma; will you not question his character?
Now you can say that just as people are pointing their fingers on Kangna Ranaut, I’m pointing fingers on the Apsara’s and the girls who slept with Mahatma.
Or, maybe you can now understand, that if you want to cause troubles for a woman, if you want her to feel down, then the easiest way is to point fingers at her character. The two main reasons a person (or the crowd) would do that, is that either she is more successful than them, or she is out of their reach.
So, what is your definition about being a whore?
I once read somewhere, "Who is a whore?" Answer: "A woman who sleeps with everyone but YOU!"
ReplyDeleteThat says a lot about it..
You are right Amit, that is what I was trying to say. A woman is called a whore by those who are less successful than her and/or she is out of their reach.
DeleteOn a more serious note, in my opinion, if we care to widen our perspectives, we ALL are whores!
ReplyDeleteSahi baat hai, because even though we are physically attached with someone but mentally we are attached with a third person.

ReplyDeleteI think that a whore per se must not be looked down upon..they are into a profession like all others..they must never be insulted..and the right to say 'no' to a customer must remain with them always, without having to assign any reasons thereof..
ReplyDeleteWhy, in many ways they too serve the society, and still never boast about it.
On the other hand we know what we all, the so called mahaan log, are doing all the time and are never ashamed of it:(
Chanakya had said, "It is necessary for the whores to there in our society, only then will be the women of respectable families will be safe." As for the the Mahaan Log, I've already mentioned India's Mahaantam Vyakti in the article, talking about others like him would be just. People such as these are filled in our Parliament.
Deleteमनीषा जी, बिल्कुल सही कहा आपने। नारी के चरित्र पर उंगली उठाना सहज बात है। पुरुष तो जैसे चरित्र का प्रमाणपत्र लेकर ही जन्म लेते है।
ReplyDeletePurush ke jitnaa charitraheen toh koi ho hi nahin saktaa...naarii ki toh baat hi chhodiye...ek pashu bhi purush se behtar hota hai!
DeleteSaahi kaha aapnai Amit. Purush nai har rishtai ko daag-daar kiya hai.
DeleteNip it in the bud. If you respect yourself, you don't have to put up a justification.
ReplyDeleteWhen others starts disrespecting you, makes your life worst than imaginable, then it becomes necessary to give justification.
DeleteThe society is skewed against women, no doubt. It's a man's world mostly, though attitudes are changing slowly.
ReplyDeleteThe Mahatma did not sleep with naked girls, Manisha, as far as I know. He had his two nieces sleep with him. Those same girls on whose shoulders he supported himself in his old age. Well, he was an eccentric man when it came to sexuality. But many of the rumours are not true.
Nieces are supposed to be like daughters, Tomichan. If its true that he slept with his nieces then it truly is shameful. Were they forced to sleep with him? There were so many many people in the Aashram. Why wasn't anyone of them choosed? Mahatma only trusted his family to sleep with him naked? And if he wanted someone from his family then why not choose a male?
DeleteGovernment takes off and bans things on the internet. Things that might ruin the reputation of our country. If many things about Mahatma are just rumors, then why weren't they taken off the internet? Won't the rumors about him ruin the reputation even more, he is after all, our "Nation's Father".
First of all, its good to read your post and analysis.
ReplyDeletefrom the beginning of the world and society Men are dominating, they have made the rules, its been just few years that women are coming out from the "Parda" and participating in jobs and competitions, in outer world---this is the reason,as i think why women are criticized badly every time.
good to see you and few other women bloggers that you are protesting the criticizer and contributing in women empowerment, but it will need time---a long time, i feel so.
Thank you, Jyotirmoy :) And its okay if it will take time. Its our will power that needs to be strong enough to continue this fight. Also, women are called characterless when they make relations with men. In that sense men are just as characterless.
DeleteIn this view I want to add my opinion that woman is the creater of man but even then she has to take respect from man as charity .. As u stated that whether whores are required in our society . YES they are very much required because of them man can behave civilized way . We the men never tolerate the women in our family who will do some extra vegent efforts to develop herself . On the other side we praise the women who have been achieved a status in society . It's our history the women like sunny leone , Kangna renawat, rakhi samwant and getting more popularity than a women behaving in civilized way .A woman is the second name of respect so they have to behave like that
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Sunny Leone, Rakhi Sawant and Kangna Ranawat; these are three completely different women. If you disagree with what they are doing, then you an option to respectably walk away. And if you think what they are doing is wrong for the society, then give them a better life. Rakhi Sawany has joined the politics, take her in your party and give her a respectable post. Before pointing fingers at someone else, first see how many of your fingers are pointing towards yourself.
DeleteA very nice post ! Women are called names when they become a threat to the men who seek to control them. Kudos the Kangana for speaking her mind and refusal to take things lying down. Kudos to you for raising all the pertinent questions.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sweta :) Kangna is a self made person. There are people who decide to do something and does not stop until its done, she is that person. She is someone who came from a common middle class family, and yet she proved that she can stand up for herself and will not bow before what is wrong. If she can do this, then why can't other women?
DeleteThank you for liking my post :)
ReplyDeleteNice article, but I cannot fully agree with you. Kangna is a strong lady, she tried really hard to achieve her position but generalizing saying Men does that Women should do this is not correct. Society is divided, you cannot say all are same, men struggle the same, sometime more, thank to our government, law and education system.
ReplyDeleteActing, modeling are some of the fields where the talent is not tangible, anybody claim to be the best, therefore obviously there are controversies, claims to let the successful down.
There are more men who praise Kanganas success, only a small fraction doesn't. Please write with a neutral view.
Thank you for liking the article, Sourav :) When any writer or organization publishes an article or news, then they cannot claim what they have written is 100% right. This article is not about Kangna or her success. This article is about the line she have said, "If a woman is sexually active, then she is called a whore".
DeleteWhen it comes to being called characterless, then both, the woman and the man, should be mentioned. One cannot with a single hand.
When the affair of Bill Clinton and Monica came out in the open, then it was Monica who had to hide her face. Bill Clinton is walking around with a proud chest to this date. When Dharmendar, a father of four had an affair and then married Hema Malini, then it was Hema who was called a housebreaker. Dharmendar is still a "Mard".
If a woman has been in more than one relationships or have married thrice or more, then she is called a whore.
I've written this article on the word Whore and Characterless. And have given examples for this in the article and also as a reply to your comment. The same way, you can name a few men who have suffered as you have mentioned. But even then, you won't be able to mention more than a few.
society have made certain rules for women, if they try to break those rules they become whores, nice article pointing out the wider perspective of the issue
ReplyDeleteNice post
DeleteWhether its a woman from today's date, or is a famous figure, or is someone from the old/sacred texts: women are tied down in just one word, whore. A daughter of another country (Sonia Gandhi) comes in ours as a daughter-in-law, then it is not accepted. A daughter of our country (Saniya Mirza) goes to another country as daughter-in-law, that too is deemed unacceptable. Shameful.
DeleteI think everything has been covered in all the above comments. I would define the professional 'whores' as SOCIAL WORKERS. There would be more rapes in the society in their absence by all those who don't take a second to call any woman a whore be it their wife or any other woman...;-(
